“God’s Word About His Word”
Psalm 119:11
May 25, 2025 Dr. Don Bazal
If this verse speaks to anything, it speaks to us as God’s people, telling us we are to be “cud-chewers”. Cows die if they do not chew their cud. Milk cows produce milk by chewing their cud. They must have long-stem fiber for food or they ultimately will die. To be productive and healthy spiritually, we must feed on God’s Word.
Meditate means to repeat, reflect and to ruminate on God’s Word. The word meditate is used 23 times in the Bible, 19 times in Psalms, and in Psalm 119 it is used 8 times. This is more than any other psalm. Psalm 119 is all about God’s word. It is an acrostic on the Hebrew alphabet with 22 stanzas – one for each letter of the alphabet. Each stanza has 8 verses for a total of 176 verses. We must chew or meditate on God’s word for life!
QUALITITES OF SCRIPTURE IN PSALM 119
1. They bring delight = joy, exhilaration
“Delight” is found seven times in Psalm 119. Let’s look at just these 3 verses:
119:16,47
Psalm 119:16,47 - 16I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your
word. . . 47I shall delight in Your commandments, which I love.
TRUTH: Delight comes from daily obedience to The Word.
TRUTH: Loving God comes by way of looking at Him through His Word.
All else is just a man’s conjecture.
2. God’s words are more valuable than wealth. Psalm 119:72,127,162
Psalm 119:72,127,162 - 72The law of Your mouth is better to me than
thousands of gold and silver pieces. . . 127Therefore I love Your commandments
above gold, yes, above fine gold. . . 162I rejoice at Your word, as one who finds
great spoil.
3. Scriptures cause our love for God to grow. Psalm 119:20,40,103
Psalm 119:20,40,103 - 20 My soul is crushed with longing after Your
ordinances at all times. . .40 Behold, I long for Your precepts; revive me
through Your righteousness. . .103 How sweet are Your words to my taste!
Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
TRUTH: Loving God leads to a longing for God.
4. Scripture enlightens us. Psalm 119:105
Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
5. Scripture strengthens us or gives stability. Psalm 119:89,90,133,165;
Isaiah 26:3
Psalm 119:89-90,133,165 - 89Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.
90Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the
earth, and it stands. . . 133Establish my footsteps in Your word, and do not let
any iniquity have dominion over me. . . 165Those who love Your law have great
peace, and nothing causes them to stumble.
Isaiah 26:3 - “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because
he trusts in You.
TRUTH: Stability means deep roots but a flexible trunk!
BENEFITS OF SCRIPTURE
1. Scripture liberates us. Psalm 119:32,61
Psalm 119:32,61 – 32I shall run the way of Your commandments, for You will
enlarge my heart. . . 61The cords of the wicked have encircled me, but I have
not forgotten Your law.
Romans and Galatians are all about our freedom in Christ.
John 8:36: “If The Son sets you free, you are free indeed.”
TRUTH: Freedom is choosing which Master we will serve. True freedom is
not the ability to do what I want, but the ability to do as I ought.
2. Scripture yields light. Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a
light to my path.
Psalm 119:125,130,169 – 125I am Your servant; give me understanding, that I
may know Your testimonies. . . 130The unfolding of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple. . . 169Let my cry come before You, O Lord;
give me understanding according to Your word.
Light is spiritual perception: John 1;1,4.
John 1;1,4 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. . . 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
3. Scripture yields life. Psalm 119:93,154
Psalm 119:93,154 – 93I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have
revived me. . . 154Plead my cause and redeem me; revive me according to
Your word.
“revives” = quickens, yielding life – The Word is life: John 1:4.
