Isaiah 50:1-11
“The Servant Hears and Obeys”
April 6, 2025 Dr. Don Bazal
The Servant here, but nowhere else, is called The Lord God or Adonay Yahweh. We see this in the beginning of vv 4,5,7,9. The Name speaks to the majesty of God in light of His people’s chosen fallenness and darkness. Evil now has permeated all of creation but God is sovereign and remains in covenant with Israel. God’s faithfulness means nothing to Israel, but to God and His Servant it means everything. The Servant seeks God’s honor and teaches men how to walk in covenant with God.
GOD’S DENIAL OF DIVORCING ISRAEL: VV 1-3
Jeremiah 3:8 – And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and given her a writ of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and was a harlot also.
Hosea 3:1-3 – Then the Lord said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by her husband, yet an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes.” 2 So I bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a half of barley. 3 Then I said to her, “You shall stay with me for many days. You shall not play the harlot, nor shall you have a man; so I will also be toward you.”
Hosea 7:4 – They are all adulterers, like an oven heated by the baker who ceases to stir up the fire from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
Hosea 11:1-4 – When Israel was a youth I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son. 2 The more they called them, the more they went from them; they kept sacrificing to the Baals and burning incense to idols. 3 Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them in My arms; but they did not know that I healed them. 4 I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love, and I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws; and I bent down and fed them.

Luke 2:46-47 – Then, after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.
Luke 2:51 – And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart.
Hebrews 5:8 – Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.
Isaiah 61:1-3 – The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn, 3 To grant those who mourn in Zion, giving them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
Matthew 11:28-29 – “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Isaiah 6:9-10 – He said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on listening, but do not perceive; Keep on looking, but do not understand.’ 10 “Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, and their eyes dim, otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and return and be healed.”
Deuteronomy 6:4 - “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!
Luke 22:42 – saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
THE SERVANT’S TRUST: VV 7-9
Luke 9:41 – And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
Matthew 16:21-24 – From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
John 8:46 – Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?
I Timothy 3:16 – By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness:
He who was revealed in the flesh, was vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
THE PROPHET’S WARNING AND ENCOURAGEMENT: VV 10-11

9 There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.

Revelation 20:12-15 – And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
